1880s photo of Fort Verde, Arizona

Camp Verde is the oldest community in the Verde Valley.  Located in north central Arizona, it was established in 1865 to protect settlers from Indian raids.  This 1880s photo is of General George Crook and other officers in front of the married officers quarters.  Crook was commander of the armed forces in the Arizona Territory.

Montezuma's Castle National Monument, five miles north of Camp Verde.  It attracts millions of visitors each year.  It is a five story, 20-room cliff dwelling believed to have been built by Sinagua Indians between A.D. 1100 and 1400.  It is 90 percent intact.

The Verde River flows through Camp Verde year around.  It provides irrigation water for Verde Valley's green belt, teems with many species of wildlife and is a popular fishing stream.  During flood stage it offers outstanding white water rafting.  Several parks throughout the Verde Valley provide public access to the river.
